I'm just a regular guy who loves to surf; though I don't get to do it everyday and am only an intermediate ability level (have been surfing for 6 years).
The Carlsbad area has some great surf spots; something for all abilities. My go-to spot is Ponto Jetty (or various breaks just north or south depending on the conditions). I also enjoy Terramar, Tamarack, and a few others. We're not talking Black's Beach or Trestles quality, but there are fun waves, and what I like best is the fact that it's almost never crowded.
Parking is also much easier than a lot of other areas along the coast (though Ponto now charges for parking in the lot...but there is a fair amount of free parking along the road).
My favorite? I'd have to say Terramar early in the morning when the water is clear and smooth...just a few people out sharing waves with the dolphins. Doesn't get much better than that!
